One of my boyhood pals who lived on my block had a grandmother who would make these fried dough treats anytime kids came over. She called them “Pizza Fritte.” She made them so good that eventually we started calling her Pizza Fritte.
Me: “Hey Sal !! Where ya goin?”
Sal: “We’re Goin to visit Pizza Fritte!.. be back later”
The next time the neighborhood kids come over, make this for them and maybe one day you too will be famous for the food you make.
What You’ll Need
1 – 16 ounce package of fresh pizza dough
¾ cup vegetable oil
Powdered sugar
What to Do
Add the vegetable oil to a small non-stick frying pan (with sides) and put a medium heat under it. Heat the oil until very hot – but not smoking.
Rip off pieces of dough and stretch them out into 2 to 3 inch ropes.*
Carefully slip one rope of dough into the hot oil. The dough should start to sizzle right away.. if it does not, then your oil is not hot enough.
Fry the dough pieces in small batches. As soon as you see the sides starting to brown, turn them over and fry on the other side – they should puff a little when you turn them.
Remove the fried dough with a slotted spoon and place them on a dish lined with paper towels. Sift powdered sugar over the top. Serve warm.
Makes about 24 pieces. My cost approx. $ 2.00 total.
*Joining the ends of the ropes will give you little doughnuts – or twist them into any shape you want. GMN
